All the fears being sparked over Google’s dominance in search, along with its land-grab of DoubleClick’s data mined consumer information, are really just an illusion.

| Google Says You Are In Charge |
Personalized search is the key to freedom when it comes to using Google. The company’s Peter Fleischer, global policy counsel, said the search giant’s policy’s put the user in charge of what they share with the company.
His op-ed piece appeared in the Financial Times, where Fleischer discussed the function of personalized search, and the challenges in finding a middle ground with its services.
He discussed the concept of context as it applies to how people search. Fleischer cited the example of searching for Paris; one searcher may searching for a romantic European getaway, while another could be looking for love life gossip about a certain hotel fortune heiress.
The more personalization people permit Google to have, the greater relevance their search results will have for those users. That’s where the quandary takes place, according to him:
The question is how do we deal with this challenge? Stop all progress on personalized search or give people a choice? We believe that the responsible way to handle this privacy issue is to ask users if they want to opt in to the service. That is why Google requires people to open an account and turn on their personalized search functionality.
Though people can turn personalized search off and on as desired, the option to do so is what has been questioned: Why should Google keep data for any reason? Fleischer said there is so much information coming online each day, “more targeted and personal results can really add to people’s quality of life.”
In other words, better living through Google.

On June 1st, low quality websites that have been set up for arbitrage will have their AdSense accounts shut down, as Google begins a big crackdown.
![]() |
| Google Hammers AdSense Arbitrage Sites |
Arbitrage is a fancy word for “buy low, sell high.” It’s a term that usually appears in conjunction with stories about the commodities markets. Google has no desire to see its AdWords and AdSense products commoditized by enterprising people who buy a cheap ad that leads to a more valuable page stuffed with AdSense units.
Jennifer Slegg has posted her account of numerous AdSense publishers receiving a breakup letter from Google. The search advertising company will shut down AdSense accounts it has deemed offensive.
In some cases, arbitrage and so-called ‘made for AdSense’ sites have been licenses to print money. Some sites noted in Jennifer’s post have been bringing in $10,000 or more per month to their publishers.
“There doesn’t seem to be any appeal process, other than the usual one,” she wrote. “And I wouldn’t hold my breath that any of these accounts would be reinstated.”
Naturally, the move is not without controversy. “Google’s own domain program is built for arbitrage,” Jeremy Luebke said at Marketing Pilgrim. “I say what is good for the goose is good for the Google.”
Unfortunately for arbitrageurs and MFA publishers, their goose is cooked.

Since Microsoft acquired online ad firm aQuantive for $6 billion, the likelihood of Steve Ballmer and company following that up with a Yahoo purchase became greater.

| Microsoft Buying Yahoo Seen As Likely |
Analysts say the darnedest things sometimes. The year-plus on-again, off-again, deny deny deny cycle of Microsoft and Yahoo talks could finally bear more than just a smattering of no comments from the two companies’ respective PR firms.
Bloomberg picked up on an analyst note from Goldman Sachs’ Andy Noto regarding a possible Microsoft-Yahoo love fest. He thinks Microsoft needs some 500,000 advertisers to compete with Google, and the aQuantive deal in itself doesn’t provide that.
Yahoo would provide that extra power, and Noto’s firm thinks its acquisition is a fait accompli. "We believe the odds of a deal happening over time actually increases," Noto wrote in his note. "Microsoft is willing to do deals that are a strategic necessity."
Neither firm is commenting on Noto’s opinion. Naturally, his thoughts aren’t universally supported. Bloomberg noted Merrill Lynch analyst Justin Post, who thinks the aQuantive purchase will take months to integrate with Microsoft.
One item of interest has to be Yahoo’s recent re-org into three divisions under CEO Terry Semel. That streamlining of corporate duties, along with Yahoo’s newly discovered passion for consolidating or eliminating services (i.e., Yahoo Photos to drop in favor of Flickr, and Yahoo Auctions shutting down), looks to us like a company making itself a more attractive takeover target.

The deal between Dell and Google that places Google’s toolbar on new Dell PCs has OpenDNS founder and CEO David Ulevitch questioning their practices.
![]() |
| OpenDNS Accuses Dell, Google Of Spyware |
Removing the Google Toolbar from a new Dell system doesn’t completely take away Google’s effect on a PC. Ulevitch thinks this borders on placing spyware on new computers, for the sake of boosting the razor-thin margins in Dell’s PC business.
"(T)he opportunity for Dell to get a recurring revenue stream from an existing customer long after the sale of the computer is more than just enticing, it’s huge," said Ulevitch. "It also means a couple other things:"
- Dell and Google have an incentive to make it very hard for users to turn this off.
- Because users can’t get rid of it, Dell and Google can get away with putting more ads on the page and pushing user-relevant content off the page.
The toolbar installation is only part of the problem, according to Ulevitch:
In fact, uninstalling the Google Toolbar won’t get rid of it. Dell and Google are now installing a second program on computers that intercepts all sorts of queries that the browser would normally try to resolve. This program has no clear name and is very hard to uninstall. In some circles, people would call this spyware.
A piece of software called Browser Address Error Redirector, or Google AFE on older systems, has to be uninstalled to make the redirection behavior go away for good.

There are a few details about Google’s foray into radio advertising that make it sound like an idea worth trying.
![]() |
| Listen Up: Google Audio Ads |
Google’s oft-stated desire to organize the world’s information meshes well with Clear Channel, which has managed to consolidate much of the US radio landscape under one umbrella. Together, they may make audio advertising for AdWords customers more appealing than people realize.
On the Google Consumer Packaged Goods blog, the company’s Corrine Perri provided an update on Google Audio Ads. She referenced their agreement with Clear Channel, one that provides a “portion of guaranteed, premium 30-second advertising inventory on 675 Clear Channel AM & FM stations.”
Clear Channel stations are all over the country. People spend a lot of time in their cars, where they are likely tuned in to one of those stations for a period of time. Perri provided some numbers that make Google’s Audio Ads program a more interesting proposition:
These Clear Channel Radio stations, when combined with our existing radio station partners, give our advertisers access to radio inventory on over 1600 top-rated radio stations throughout the country, with “Top 10″ stations in 24 of the top 25 U.S. markets and coverage of over 99% of the U.S. population aged 12 and older (meaning 99% of people 12+ can tune in an hear one of our stations; Source: ACT1 / Arbitron).
Various options for targeting these ads, like location, day and time, demographics, and station type, make the product one a marketer should at least consider when building a campaign.

Blogging about the company you work for can land you in trouble and according to a survey from human resources firm Croner, conducted by YouGov found that 39 percent of bloggers admitted to posting damaging commentary about their workplace.

| Blogging About The Workplace Is Risky |
Some companies are now providing guidelines on employee blogging policy to protect against negative or sensitive disclosures. The recent case of Petite Anglaise, an English secretary dismissed from her job in France for writing about her employer in her journal points out that a structured approach is needed.
Croner recommends businesses explore the impact blogging could have on their reputation.
"An employee can sound off about his bad day at work on a blog without fully considering the impact such a posting may have," said Croner’s Gillian Dowling.
"If there is a negative impact on the organization’s corporate image which is so serious that it breaches the implied term of mutual trust and confidence, the employee could be dismissed for gross misconduct.
"The blog could also be evidence of other conduct issues or reveal workplace discrimination or bullying."
